Is the ‘Exact Date’ of Jesus’ Return Near? Biblical ‘Signs’ Point to Doomsday

Time is ticking, and believers are counting down days. A South African pastor, Joshua Mhlakela, has made headlines with his YouTube video, making a bold claim that Jesus Christ will return to Earth on September 23-24.

He describes receiving a supernatural vision where God took him to witness future events. “I saw Jesus sitting on his throne, and I can hear him very loud and clear saying that I am coming soon. He said to me on the 23rd and 24th of September 2025, I will come back to the Earth,” Mhlakela declared.

September 23 falls on Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish Feast of Trumpets. The timing of this has caught attention from rapture watchers who see prophetic meaning in the trumpet connection. Given 1 Thessalonians 4:16 describes Jesus descending “with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God.”

Mhlakela isn’t the only one making these claims. Comments under his video show people sharing their own supernatural experiences, with one parent writing that their 10-year-old daughter recently dreamed of the rapture.

Signs American Christians Are Watching

Believers are claiming they see biblical prophecies playing out everywhere they look. Pastor Tom Hughes, who runs the popular “Hope for Our Times” ministry and has taught Bible prophecy for over 30 years, has counted 11 prophetic signs that make 2025 feel different. AI and deepfake technology now create the kind of deception Jesus warned about in Matthew 24:24. False signs so convincing they could “deceive, if possible, even the elect.”

Anti-Semitism keeps rising worldwide, and Jewish people keep returning to Israel just as Ezekiel predicted thousands of years ago. “Jerusalem is becoming a burdensome stone for all nations,” Hughes said, quoting Zechariah 12:3. American Christians watch Middle East headlines and see ancient prophecies coming true.

Everything seems to center on Israel. The nation reformed in 1948 after nearly 2,000 years, and believers have watched every development since. They follow Temple Mount news closely because certain prophecies need the Temple rebuilt before Christ returns.

But it’s not just Israel. Wars rage in Ukraine while tensions explode across the Middle East. America splits along cultural lines while natural disasters pile up. Many see all these events colliding at once, creating what feels like the perfect biblical storm.

What Rapture Really Means

For anyone unfamiliar with the concept, the Rapture represents a core doctrine in many evangelical churches. According to the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, the Rapture involves believers, both living and dead. Being transported to heaven following God’s trumpet call. While those left behind face tribulation before Christ’s second coming to establish His earthly kingdom.

The doctrine describes believers receiving eternal bodies and rising “into the clouds” to escape Earth’s judgment. The Bible promises in 1 John 3:2 that “We know that when Christ appears, we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is.”

Those who miss the Rapture face seven years of unparalleled tribulation before Jesus’ visible return to defeat His enemies and establish a thousand-year reign on Earth.

Why Date Setting Creates Problems

The September 23 prediction faces pushback from theologians, even those who accept the Rapture doctrine. The main objection comes from biblical Scripture itself. Jesus stated in Matthew 24:36 that “But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, but My Father only.”

Paul wrote in 2 Thessalonians 2:3 that “the man of sin must be exposed” before Jesus returns. An event most Bible scholars say hasn’t occurred yet. Critics argue that any prediction setting a date ignores clear scriptural warnings.

American church history provides countless examples of failed predictions. From the Millerites in the 1840s to Harold Camping’s multiple predictions in recent decades, date-setting has brought disappointment and damaged faith across denominations.

But supporters argue that while no one knows the exact hour, believers should recognize the “season” of Christ’s return through observable signs. They separate knowing precise timing from recognizing general proximity based on fulfilling prophecies.

Current Events Fuel Speculation

Beyond Mhlakela’s vision, people point to numerous current events as potential prophetic fulfillments. The rapid rise of artificial intelligence raises questions about end-times deception and surveillance capabilities. Global efforts toward unified governance echo biblical warnings about a one-world system under Antichrist control.

Recent sky events have captured people’s attention. The blood moon that appeared on September 7-8, 2025, has been linked to Joel 2:28-31. Which describes the moon turning to blood “before the great and awesome day of the Lord comes.”

And then, with rising economic uncertainty, increasing Christian persecution worldwide, and America’s moral breakdown, all of which are featured in the prophetic discussions. People who are believers are seeing these as signs. They are waiting for Jesus’ return.

While some religious leaders have acknowledged the theoretical importance of the Feast of Trumpets for prophetic events, most warn against setting dates. Messianic Rabbi Jonathan Cahn, though recognizing the potential connection between the rapture and the Feast of Trumpets, has warned against date-setting, saying that failed predictions “bring disrepute to the Lord if it doesn’t happen.”

Readiness Over Certainty

Whether September 23 brings the Rapture or simply another Tuesday remains unknown. As one online commenter wisely wrote, “Rather than argue, let’s stay watchful and keep ourselves ready, only God knows the hour.” This captures the tension between prophetic anticipation and biblical humility about divine timing.

The September 23 prediction will either validate Mhlakela’s vision or join the long list of failed prophecies. But for millions of believers, the more important question isn’t whether they can predict Jesus’ return, but whether they’re prepared whenever it occurs. The signs may be debatable, but the call to spiritual readiness remains constant regardless of dates on any calendar.
