The Bulgarian mystic’s forecast for this year ranges from catastrophic natural disasters to humanity’s first contact with extraterrestrial life. However, documented transcripts directly from Baba Vanga herself are rare, if they exist at all. Most of her prophecies have been interpreted, reinterpreted, and circulated long after her death in 1996.

At their core, these predictions offer a glimpse into collective anxieties about conflict, technology, and environmental collapse. While skeptics point to the lack of verifiable sources, believers see eerie patterns in past events. Who Was Baba Vanga?

Vangeliya Pandeva Gushterova, known as Baba Vanga, was born on October 3, 1911, in Strumica, located in present-day North Macedonia. She lost her sight at age 12 in 1923 after a ‘tornado’ lifted her into the air, according to her accounts. She was only recovered by rescuers after a long search, with sand and dust, leaving her with gradual sight loss. Other speculation and rumors circulated claiming she received her powers of foresight after being struck by lightning, subsequently making her blind.

Vanga attended a school for the blind in Zemun from 1925 to 1928, learning Braille, piano, knitting, and cooking. She returned home to her family after the death of her stepmother to take care of her younger siblings. She claimed her prophetic abilities emerged after the tornado incident, during the days she lay injured in the field. Vanga later credited these visions to “invisible creatures,” though she struggled to explain what they were.

During Yugoslavia’s invasion and dismantling by the Axis during World War II, her reputation grew. Thousands of people visited her, seeking information about missing relatives or predictions about their futures. After the war, she gained recognition across Eastern Europe for her alleged clairvoyance and healing abilities. Bulgarian Tsar Boris III even sought her counsel during World War II.

Baba Vanga died on August 11, 1996, in Bulgaria. She was 85 years old. Accounts differ on the exact cause, with some citing a heart attack and others breast cancer. Notably, she predicted her own death date in a 1990 interview. She told a close friend, Eli Goreva, that she would “rest” on August 11, be buried on the 13th, and “travel” on the 14th. 

The Credibility of Her Predictions

Like with most clairvoyant predictions, it’s best to take them with a grain of salt. Baba Vanga never wrote down her own predictions. She was semi-literate and relied on staff members and visitors to document her statements. No authenticated transcripts exist, which makes the prophecies difficult to authenticate and attribute to Baba Vanga.  Most of her famous prophecies appeared in media reports and internet articles long after her death. Eli Goreva, who knew Vanga for nearly 30 years, noted that people spreading these prophecies never verified when Vanga allegedly made them. Predictions about 9/11, the Kursk submarine disaster, and Barack Obama’s election all surfaced after 1996, making the timeline of her predictions difficult to place. 

Many of her predictions did not come to fruition. She allegedly forecast that World War III would begin between 2010 and 2014 and that predicted aliens would land on Earth in 2023. She claimed Europe would be “empty” and humans would be able to create children with selected traits by 2025. Neither of which is true; however, the latter reflects our advancements in genetic treatments. 

The Predictions That Did Come True

However, despite some of her predictions not coming to exist, some of Baba Vanga’s predictions do align with a few historical events. These “hits” have fueled her enduring legend.

In 1980, she reportedly said Kursk, Russia, would be “covered with water and the whole world will weep over it.” Most assumed she spoke of the city of Kursk. However, in August 2000, a Russian nuclear submarine named Kursk sank in the Barents Sea. All 118 crew members died. The tragedy dominated global headlines. However, she was off by a year and spoke of a city rather than a submarine.

In 1989, Baba Vanga allegedly said, “Horror, horror! The American brethren will fall after being attacked by the steel birds. The wolves will be howling in a bush, and innocent blood will be gushing.” Many believers interpret “steel birds” as the hijacked planes that struck the Twin Towers on September 11, 2001. The word “bush” is seen as a reference to President George W. Bush, who led the U.S. response. While the prediction is partially vague, the parallels are somewhat recognisable.

For 2022, Vanga predicted major droughts in major cities and severe floods in Australia and Asia. The UK experienced its driest July since 1935, prompting an official drought declaration in August 2022. Parts of France, Italy, and Portugal faced record droughts and devastating wildfires. Meanwhile, Sydney saw 8 months of rain fall in just 4 days, causing the city’s third major flood of the year. Japan’s weather agency warned of flooding in Tokyo as a major tropical storm battered the region.

Global Conflict Escalation

Baba Vanga‘s 2026 predictions center heavily on rising global conflict. Last year, her name was attached to forecasts of an “East vs. West” confrontation. For 2026, interpreters say she warned of a “wider escalation of conflict across the globe in general.” The vague and broad prediction allows itself to be interpreted in multiple ways but does craft a picture eerily similar to the geopolitical tensions present today.

Ongoing disputes over Taiwan, the Russia-Ukraine war, and the Israeli genocide of Palestinians provide ample verification for Baba Vanga’s predictions. Some believers claim Vanga foresaw direct confrontations between China, Russia, and the United States. Others suggest she warned that 2026 would mark a “dangerous hinge” moment, with rhetoric shading into World War III territory. However, Baba Vanga also allegedly predicted the world would end in 5079, which offers some reassurance to believers that the end is indeed not nigh. 

One of the most dramatic claims attributed to Baba Vanga is that humanity will encounter extraterrestrial life in November 2026. Believers say she spoke of a “massive spacecraft” or “large craft” approaching Earth. This prophecy has gained traction online, fueled by speculation about interstellar objects and unidentified aerial phenomena.

The discovery of 3I/ATLAS in July 2025 added fuel to the fire. This interstellar comet is the third confirmed object from beyond our solar system to pass through, following 1I/ʻOumuamua and 2I/Borisov. The Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System (ATLAS) in Chile first detected it. Its origin traces back to the constellation Sagittarius, near the Milky Way’s galactic center. While the comet is scientifically fascinating, it is not the massive alien spacecraft Baba Vanga supposedly described.

Catastrophic Natural Disasters

Another widely repeated claim says massive earthquakes, violent volcanic eruptions, and extreme weather will devastate 7 to 8% of the planet’s land area in 2026. Baba Vanga’s predictions rarely specify locations or exact dates. Nevertheless, this forecast has gained traction given recent climate catastrophes in the last year alone.

Europe experienced record heatwaves in recent years. Australia, California, and Canada suffered devastating wildfires. In 2025, a catastrophic earthquake in Myanmar killed over 1,700 people. These events lend credibility to general disaster predictions, even though attributing them to Vanga is speculative at best.

Climate scientists confirm that rising global temperatures are intensifying weather anomalies. Floods, wildfires, and seismic activity are all becoming more frequent and severe. However, these trends are driven by well-documented environmental factors and not clairvoyance.

An AI Turning Point

Several believers credit Baba Vanga with warning that artificial intelligence would begin to dominate key sectors around 2026. The prediction centers on job disruption, ethical dilemmas, and the possibility of AI surpassing human control. Given the rapid pace of AI development, this forecast has gained significant attention.

Concerns about AI replacing jobs have come to the forefront in the past year. Microsoft released a report indicating that AI could eventually take over hundreds of professions, including nursing assistants and skilled manual laborers. As the technology exponentially improves and advances, our current employment and societal framework are struggling to adapt. Whether Baba Vanga actually predicted this or whether it’s a retrofitted interpretation has not been clarified. Nevertheless, the themes of her prophecy do align with contemporary anxieties about technology outpacing humanity’s ability to control it.

Although most of Baba Vanga’s economic claims are tied to 2025, some believers extend her warnings into 2026. They point to currency crises, heightened market volatility, and worsening inflation as potential outcomes. The idea is that other disruptions, such as political conflict, natural disasters, and even alien contact, will ripple through supply chains and global markets.

These predictions are vague enough to apply to almost any economic downturn. Financial instability that began in 2025 could easily persist into 2026. However, attributing these trends to a mystic who died in 1996 requires a significant leap of faith.

Mining Energy From Venus

This prediction is technically scheduled for 2028, but interpreters argue that for this prophecy to ring true, establishing the foundational work needs to begin immediately. Baba Vanga allegedly foresaw humanity starting to harvest energy from Venus within the next few years. However, while we have made strides in space exploration, we have only begun to ponder space travel for mining resources. 

While NASA and other space agencies are indeed looking at Venus for future missions, there are many obstacles that need to be overcome before harvesting is possible. The planet’s thick atmosphere and extreme surface temperatures pose enormous challenges. Harvesting energy from Venus is still firmly in the realm of theoretical physics and speculative engineering. No concrete plans exist for 2028, let alone 2026.

Synthetic Organs: Building Toward 2046

Baba Vanga previously predicted that mass-produced synthetic organs would become available in 2046. Followers argue that 2026 could be the year critical groundwork solidifies.

Recent developments in xenotransplantation support this timeline. Massachusetts General Hospital performed the world’s first genetically-edited pig kidney transplant into a living human in March 2024. The patient, 62-year-old Richard Slayman, received the kidney in a 4-hour surgery. In January 2025, surgeons at Mass General completed a second transplant. The recipient, 66-year-old Tim Andrews, was discharged from the hospital about a week after the procedure. As of late 2025, Andrews was thriving more than 8 months post-transplant.

The genetically-edited pig kidneys come from eGenesis and Revivicor. These pigs are bred in pathogen-free facilities under FDA oversight. The genetic modifications reduce the risk of rejection and infection. The FDA approved Mass General to perform additional xenotransplants in 2025.

Researchers at UC San Francisco and Cedars-Sinai developed a new method in 2024 to prompt stem cells to form specific organs. These types of advances bring the idea of mass-produced synthetic organs closer to reality. While 2046 still seems far off, the scaffolding is beginning to take shape.

Multi-Cancer Blood Tests Move to the Mainstream

Fans credit Baba Vanga with foreseeing a major leap in cancer diagnosis and treatment. They claim 2026 could be the year multi-cancer early-detection (MCED) blood tests transition from pilot studies to national screening programs in at least one major country.

MCED tests analyze circulating cell-free DNA (cfDNA) in the blood. Cancer cells shed DNA fragments into the bloodstream. Researchers use machine-learning algorithms to examine methylation patterns on this cfDNA. These patterns help distinguish between healthy cells and cancerous cells.

The Galleri MCED test, developed by Grail, screens for more than 50 types of cancer. It works in three steps: analyzing blood for cfDNA, identifying methylation patterns from cancer cells, and predicting which organ the cancer may have originated in. PATHFINDER 2, the largest interventional MCED trial in North America, is currently underway. The study examines the safety and efficacy of the Galleri test in an intended-use population.| 

In the United Kingdom, the NHS-Galleri study involves 140,000 participants. Half receive annual Galleri blood tests, while the other half have their blood collected and stored. Results are anticipated in mid-2026. If the data shows a reduction in late-stage cancer diagnoses, it could pave the way for widespread adoption.

Baba Vanga’s Track Record
