When we think of detoxing our homes, we often have big plans such as installing water filters, air purifiers, and maybe even a cool Himalayan salt lamp in the bedroom.
While all these are excellent measures to take when it comes to detoxing, it’s the small things which are neglected which often cause people to become sick. The whole goal of detoxing a home is to reduce the presence of toxins, bacteria, allergens and harmful chemicals.
The reason we do this is to prevent illness and harmful diseases from taking root. So, attention to the small details is just as important as the big sweeping changes we make.
Come explore some of the very often neglected areas/items that should be wiped down and detoxed every now and then.
1. Doorknobs
The doorknobs in your home will often have bacteria and need to be wiped down about once a week with a natural disinfectant.
2. Dish cloths
Dish cloths are full of bacteria. Since they’re damp, the bacteria can thrive. The best way to disinfect a dish cloth will be to soak it in a pot of boiling water that has some natural detergent.
However, nothing kills bacteria quite like boiling water. Wash the dish cloth well and dry it in a clean place. Ideally, you should wash your dish cloth daily. Make sure you have more than one so you can change to a new one as needed.
3. Water taps
There is no point in washing your hands if you get bacteria on them when you turn off the taps. Just rinsing your taps with water once a day while washing your hands will help to wash away the bacteria festering around them.
4. Toilet handle
A box of disinfectant wipes will easily do the job. All you need to do is wipe the handle after use. You can do it once every day or every other day, or whatever schedule you choose to set.
5. Your mobile phone / tablet / keys
While not a part of your home per se, you’ll definitely be using these or touching these at home. These devices are with you wherever you go.
They will have bacteria on them because they come into contact with many different surfaces from the table at the restaurant to your car. Lightly wipe them with a disinfectant wipe and they’ll be easily cleaned.
6. Kitchen countertops
Your kitchen countertop may have small food particles that are decomposing and you can’t see them. I know I always catch a few that fell and slid under the microwave. Any place that comes into contact with food should be wiped down thoroughly.
7. Your refrigerator
Cleaning your refrigerator once a month is a good idea. Wipe down the raw frozen food areas, etc. You want to keep the raw food and cooked food separate so that cross contamination doesn’t occur.
Don’t forget to also wipe the fridge handles!
8. TV remote
Think of how many times you and/or your family touch your TV remote in a day…
9. Computer keyboard/mouse
Want to know how many times I eat while on my computer? Maybe you don’t want to know. But, the amount of crumbs I have to wipe down may be a little embarrassing, lol.
10. Light switches
The amount of times we turn the lights off and on can add up to a lot of germs. This includes light switches on the walls and any lamps.
11. House phone (does anyone still use a landline?!)
If you still use a landline, just think of how many times someone has put the receiver up to their ear!
Any area in your house that’s frequently touched or used by all members of the household should be wiped with a disinfectant every now and then. Take a look around your house and disinfect what you think needs some extra attention. Make a list and spend an hour or two every weekend and do a quick detox for your household items. It’s easy and quick if you have a plan.
